چکیده

The Pantanal is a vast evaporation plain and sediment accumulation surface that floods annually. It is located in the Upper Paraguay River Basin, a major source of floodwaters to the Pantanal. The recent construction of a large dam in the upper reach of the Cuiabá River raises questions: What will be the dam influence on the flood area and duration? What will be the consequence for groundwater replenishment and permanence of flow in the floodplain channels during the dry period? This study of the Cuiabá River, within the Pantanal, describes water flow between the river channel and its adjacent floodplain, as well as relations between the surface water and groundwater near the river. Flooding of the plain adjacent to the Cuiabá River critically depends on the river stage and proceeds through a complex hydrographic network. No free water table was encountered; groundwater was confined below clay–silt layers. Two groundwater bodies were distinguished based on their piezometric behavior. In both cases the river stage variations appeared to control the piezometric heads and the flood was the main recharge source. The groundwater moved from the river towards the floodplain where it appeared to sustain channel flow and to maintain soil humidity in depressed areas during the dry period. q 2003 Published by Elsevier B.V.

A Regression-Based Analysis to Assess the Impact of Fluoride Reach River Water on the Groundwater Aquifer Adjacent to the River: A Case Study in Bharalu River Basin of Guwahati, India

Fluoride is one of the parameters which is non-degradable and naturally occurring inorganic anion found in many natural streams, lakes, and groundwater. Serious problems are faced in several parts of India due to the high consumption of fluoride through drinking water. These may cause dental and skeletal fluorosis to humans. This study aims to examine the level of fluoride in both Bharalu river...

A successful case of biological invasion: the fish Cichla piquiti, an Amazonian species introduced into the Pantanal, Brazil.

The 'tucunaré', Cichla piquiti, an exotic Amazonian fish has become established along the left bank of the Paraguay River in the Pantanal. It was introduced by escaping from culture ponds in the Upper Piquiri River and spread downstream, along the lateral flooded areas of that river, continuing through the clear waters of the left bank of the Paraguay River and reaching south as far as the Para...

Application of Hydrological Balance Approach in the Study of Surface Water-Groundwater Exchange (Case Study: Zayandehrood River)

Introduction: Studying the changes in surface water storage and exchanges with groundwater in the hydrological system of rivers is a prerequisite for water resources management in the basin. In this paper, Zayandehrood River has been studied and the historical series of flow has been used in six hydrographic stations located downstream the Zayandehrood Dam. Materials and Methods: Based on the ...

Evaluation of Groundwater Chemistry of a Central Kerala River Basin, India using Multivariate Analysis

Statistical processing of data was necessary to arrive at a reasonable conclusion regarding the chemical behavior of groundwater in a river basin. Multivariate analysis was done to elucidate the groundwater chemistry of a Central Kerala River basin. Hydrochemical parameters like EC, pH, TDS, TH, Ca, Mg, Na, K, Cl, F, HCO 3 +CO 3 , SO 4 , total Fe were estimated in the pre- monsoon and post-mons...
